Who Can Satisfy My Soul?

Who Can Satisfy My Soul

Introduction

Today I want to pull a song from deep in the archives of praise choruses and look at “Who Can Satisfy My Soul Like You?” written by Dennis Jernigan. The song covers four different themes: who can satisfy my soul, living water, blessed redeemer, and no one more faithful. As always the video is embedded below.

Who Can Satisfy My Soul?

The first verse starts with the question of who can satisfy my soul like you? The answer of course is no one. Jesus is our ultimate comforter and will always be faithful to us even when we fail him. Matthew 28:20 reminds us that “I am with you always, to the end of the age (ESV).” Similarly, Hebrews 13:5 states “I will never leave you, nor forsake you (ESV).” These are not mere statements these are promises. We can always trust in Jesus to be faithful to us no matter what, never forget that.

Living Water

The second verse calls Jesus living water, this is in reference to John 4 where Jesus is speaking to the Samaritan woman. The Jews traditionally avoided the Samaritans including going out of their way to go around Samaria whenever possible. So, when Jesus sits down at a well and asks a Samaritan for some water it is unusual. So unusual in fact that the woman questions Jesus’ actions. His response was to tell her that if she had only asked he would have given her living water (John 4:10). When she asks about this water Jesus explains that “Everyone who drinks of this water[from the well] will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life (John 4:13-14, ESV).”

Blessed Redeemer

The chorus reminds us that Jesus is on the throne and He is the King. We are also reminded in the chorus that “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold (Psalm 18:2, ESV).” Jesus is the rock of our salvation and we can trust him to be our shelter through thick and thin.

No One More Faithful

No one will ever be more faithful than Jesus. Put your faith and trust in him only. “And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord (Joshua 24:15, ESV).”
