Fear is a Liar

Introduction

Continuing our series on fear. One of my new favorite songs “Fear is a Liar” by Zach Williams. The lyrics are really powerful. If you haven’t read the other posts in the series you can find them here, what is it? And What the Bible says. The lyric video for the song in embedded below or listen on your favorite streaming service.

Verse 1: Never Good Enough

The first verse reminds us of all the ways fear tells us we aren’t good enough. Fear likes to take our insecurities and convince us that we are nothing but those insecurities. And yet the Bible tells us we are “fearfully and wonderfully made. (Psalm 139:14, ESV)” And are “more valuable than the birds of the air. (Matthew 6:26, ESV)” Therefore no matter what we are good enough for our heavenly father and good enough for the path He has placed on. You probably won’t be able to accomplish what you have been called to do alone but nothing is impossible with the help of Christ. “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength (Philippians 4:13, NIV).”

Verse 2: Always Alone

Verse two tells us all the ways we will always be alone that we aren’t loved and can’t be changed. The Bible tells us the exact opposite. Joshua 1:5 tells us “As I was with Moses so I will be with you I will never leave you nor forsake you (ESV).” What greater promise can we rest on than that God will always be with us. When we accept Christ as our Savior we are changed and there is nothing that can inhibit that. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, the old has passed away; behold, the new has come (2 Corinthians 5:17, ESV).” So not only will we never be alone we are made new in Christ.

Chorus/Bridge: Fear Lies

Fear is a thief that has come to “steal and kill and destroy (John 10:10a, ESV).” He steals our happiness, kills our joy and destroys our rest in the Lord. But the second part of the verse tells us that “I have come that you may have life and have it more abundantly (John 10:10b, ESV).” By relying on Christ in our fear we have the opportunity to have an abundant life. Often when we think of abundance, we think in terms of material abundance. But in Christ we have eternal abundance even when we don’t have material abundance.
Fear is a feeling but in reality, that feeling is created by a demon named fear. So the feeling is often personified in this sense. Fear lies it’s that simple. The ultimate goal of Satan is to keep the people of God from fulfilling his purpose. In fact, Ephesians tells us that “10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places (6:10-12, ESV).” Through Christ we have the power to tell him to take a hike. I encourage you seize that power and don’t let fear run your life.
