This Is Me

Introduction

This song was part of “The Greatest Showman” but it really spoke to me. I have a tendency to hide who I am from people especially new people. When I hear this song it reminds me to be me no matter what. If you haven’t heard this song yet or want a refresher of its lyrics watch the embedded video.

Broken Parts

Verse one is all about hiding in the dark because our brokenness is unwanted by the world. However, our story is important, our brokenness is important. Why you ask? Because if we tell our story and embrace our brokenness, we can help someone who may be on the same journey and in need of encouragement that they can overcome what they are going through. We are “fearfully and wonderfully made (Ps 114, ESV).” Never be ashamed of how you were created in the father’s eyes you are perfect and in our weakness He receives all the glory (2 Corinthians 12:9). The disciples were told “if the world hates you remember it hated me first (John 15:18, NIV).”

Warriors

Pushing through pain, suffering, and brokenness gives us a unique strength we become warriors. In 2 Corinthians 12:10 Paul reminds the church “For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong (ESV).” We fight for ourselves and learn to fight for others. In John we are told “In this word you will have trouble but take heart I have overcome the world.” While we learn to fight, we also need to remember that we have a mighty warrior in our corner who is more than capable of doing our fighting for us. There is no shame in trusting him and leaning on him to fight the battles for us.

Power of Words

The chorus is where it’s at in this song. For me it often serves as a mantra when the world tries to beat me down. There is no one like me and I have no reason to be ashamed of that fact. Let them see my bruises and my imperfections, they make me who I am, and they make me strong. They can do the same for you. There is great power in a mantra, repeating it over and over it becomes a part of you. As kids we always told mean people that “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” But in reality, words are among the most hurtful things, physical bruises fade but emotional scars take much longer to heal. If that is true for negative words think of the power that positive words can have.

Deserving Love

We all deserve love, whether you believe that today or not it’s true. We have a Savior who loves us so much he was willing to die on a cross for us. He wants nothing more than to be your strength when you have none, to be your warrior and to help you step out of the shadows into the light where you belong. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven (Matthew 5:14-16, ESV).”
